Posted by on June 27, 2010

In the modern world it seems as if weddings come and go and part and parcel of being a guest is to take a present for the happy couple. Wedding gifts can be anything from the most magnificent sculpture to the slightly more mundane and boring tin opener. The sheer range of gifts out there means that no matter what you are looking for it is possible to find something that the bride and groom will be happy with and of course that is within your own budget.

The nature of wedding gifts has changed immensely in the past few decades. Twenty to thirty years ago the purpose of receiving gifts was to help people set up their new home together. This has changed however as many couples have now lived with each other before they are married meaning that the bulk of household items have already been purchased by the couple during their years together. This has led to a trend in wedding gifts of people asking for all number of items, from the outlandish to the bizarre.

In most cases, the happy couple will put together a wedding list or registry. The process of completing a list today typically means the betrothed visit a shop, are given a barcode scanner and then get the chance to run riot, scanning all of the items they could want within the store. This is the modern way to complete a wedding list, it means that all of the gifts are electronically stored and then either printed out to be sent to the guests or posted online so that guests can go to the store’s website and order from there. Some see this as an extremely impersonal way of asking guests for gifts but is arguably the most logical and in many cases the easiest option.

That said as a guest you do not always have to buy wedding gifts from the list and can choose to find a present using your own initiative. There is always the risk that you will buy the newlyweds something they already have but it does allow you to give a far more personal present. Whenever buying a wedding gift without the list it important to consider whether the item has longevity and will be able to remind the couple of their special day for the rest of their lives.
